(The gardener was getting annoyed while pulling weeds in the garden. A passerby asked.
"We don't even weed or care for them, yet they grow so well—so why do the carefully planted flowers wilt with just a little lack of water?"
The gardener replied.
"Weeds are tended by divine providence, but flowers are cared for by human hands."
What a meaningful statement.
Humans believe that creating a good environment and constantly protecting something is essential for its growth, but nature shows that allowing it to endure on its own is a greater form of education than excessive protection.
Weeds are not hardy plants. It is actually weak when competing with other plants.
So it finds and roots itself in barren places where strong plants cannot easily invade.
It survives where people walk, between the cracks of stones, and even on land that does not rain.
If pulled out, it grows back; if trampled, it survives even lying sideways.
The true strength of weeds lies not in their toughness, but in their ability to adapt without resenting difficult conditions.
Human life is no different. Parents who love their children want to give them only the best. They raise them without leaving anything to them, take on the hard work, and even clear the stones ahead to prevent them from falling.
However, excessive protection does not necessarily make a good person.
Rather, the common saying, “A child who is raised roughly has good character and good health rather than one raised too gently,” contains wisdom for life.
Here, “mak-gyunda” does not mean neglect.
It means letting them face small difficulties on their own and bear their own share of the burden by their own strength.
A flower in a greenhouse is beautiful, but it may be vulnerable to the cold outside.
In contrast, the weeds in the field endure wind, rain, and drought, rooting themselves deeply.
It's the same with people.
People who have grown up experiencing moderate deprivation and frustration often come to understand the ways of the world more quickly and learn to empathize with others’ pain, rather than those who grew up unencumbered by hardship.
That does not mean flowers are bad and weeds are good.
Flowers are beautiful in their own right, and weeds are great in their own.
What matters is not the environment in which you were raised, but how you overcame it.
If you live your life, you’ll find that everyone has a time when they feel like weeds.
It is a moment when no one acknowledges me, and I feel as if I have no one on my side.
But perhaps that time is also when we firmly plant our roots.
So let us not be discouraged just because life is a little harsh. Weeds are flowers too. It is merely a flower that blooms without a name.
Perhaps God's providence lies in always taking care of us with comfort.
Perhaps it lies in placing them alone in the rough fields and teaching them the strength to endure and stand up on their own.)
