악수(握手)의 유래
악수(握手)는 중세에 기사 (騎士)들이 오른 손을 맞잡아 흔듦으로 싸울 의사가 없다는
의사를 표시하는 인사법
(Way of Greeting)에서 시작됐다.
그러므로 악수할 때도 지켜야 하는 예의범절(Etiquette)이 있다.
악수할 때는 반드시 고개를 들고
상대방을 응시(凝視)해야 한다.
눈은 다른 데 두고 손만 잡는 것은
상대를 무시하거나 적개심을 가졌다는 표시가 된다.
눈을 마주치지 않는 행동은
뭔가 좋지 않은 마음을 숨기려는
의도를 나타내는 것이다.
손을 맞잡을 때 너무 꽉 쥐거나,
전혀 쥐지 않고 손을 편 채
상대방이 잡도록 유도하는

애마지도
(愛馬之道)’는 ‘장자(莊子)’에 나오는 이야기이다.
자신이
키우는 말을 너무나 사랑하는 사육사가 있었는데,
그는 말똥을 광주리에 직접 받아 내고, 말의 오줌을
큰 조개껍데기로 만든 귀한 그릇에 담아 처리할 정도로 모든 애정을 쏟았다.
매일같이
말의
털을 빗겨주고
좋은 사료를 가득 채워줬다.
그런데 어느 날 자신이 사랑하는 말의 등에 파리가
한 마리 앉아서
말을 괴롭히는 것을 보게 됐다.
그는
손바닥으로
세게 쳐서
파리를 잡았다.
그런데 말은 사육사가 자신을 때린다고 생각하여 깜짝 놀라 뒷발로 사육사의
갈비뼈를 찼다.
결국 사육사는 비극을 맞이하게 됐다.
사육사의 사랑이 담긴 행동이 말에게는 아픔이
된 것이다.

펠리컨(Pelican)이라는 새(鳥)는 새끼들에게 줄 먹이가 없으면 자신의 가슴살을 뜯어 먹입니다.
병에 걸려 죽어가는 새끼에게는 자신의 핏줄을 터뜨려 그 피를 입에 넣어줍니다.
어미 펠리컨은 자신은 죽어가면서도 새끼를 위해 기꺼이 목숨을 바치는 모성애가 강한 새로 알려져 있습니다.
그래서 서양인들은 펠리컨을 사랑과 희생의 상징으로 여기고 있습니다.
개(犬)는 새끼를 낳으면 새끼들의 똥오줌을 어미가 모두핥아 먹습니다.
그렇게하지 않으면 강아지들은 항문과 요도가 막혀 죽고맙니다.
그래서 개(犬)는 자신의 젖이 떨어져 새끼들이 밥을 먹을 때까지 새끼들의 똥오줌을 어미가 모두 핥아먹는 것입니다.

새끼에게 줄 먹이를 물어오는데 그럴 때면 혹시라도 자신이 그 먹이를 먹을까봐 먹이가 담긴 자기몸의 소낭(素囊)에 아예 보호막을 쳐서 소화기능을 정지시키는 정성을 지니고 있습니다.
실로 놀라운 정성이 아닐 수 없습니다
천신만고 끝에 새끼가 있는 곳에 돌아왔을 때 만에하나 새끼가 이미 죽고 없으면 소낭속의 먹이를 그냥 토해버릴지언정 자기가 먹는 일은 결코 없다고 합니다.
실제로 한 동물원에서 하루에 물고기 2~3kg을 배급받던 황제 펭귄 한 마리가 굶어죽은 일이 있었는데, 자신에게 배급된 모든 먹이를 새끼에게 주었기 때문이라 합니다.
옛날 중국의 전국시대 때 진나라 군사들이 촉나라 땅을 정벌(征伐)하기 위해 배를 타고 가던 중 양자강 기슭, 삼협이란 곳에서 원숭이 새끼 한 마리를 붙잡아 배에 싣고 갔습니다.
그런데 배가 삼협에서 백여 리쯤 떨어진 곳에 정박하자 어미 원숭이 한 마리가 배에 뛰어올라 그대로 죽고 말았습니다.
신기하게 여긴 군사들이 그 어미 원숭이의 배를 갈라 보았더니 창자가 마디마디 끊어져 있었습니다.
삼협에서 새끼를 빼앗긴 어미가 벼랑으로 이어진 백여리 강기슭을 뛰어서 따라왔던 것이고 새끼를 잃은 비통함에 어미의 창자가 끊어졌다는 단장(斷腸)의 고사(古史)입니다.
실로 놀라운 일이 아닐수 없습니다.
동물학자들은 ‘단장(斷腸)'의 고사가 실제로도 가능하다고 말합니다.
고릴라나 오랑우탄, 침팬지 등은 새끼를 업거나 안고 다니는 경우가 많으며 새끼가 죽으면 시체가 썩을 때까지 새끼를 안고 다니는 모습을 보는 경우가 허다하다는 것입니다.
1962년 2월 10일, 여수 남 국민학교 졸업식에서 일어났던 일입니다.
졸업식장에서 회색 스웨터에 까만 낡은 바지를 입은 중년부인이 노력상을 받았습니다.
그 부인이 단상에 올라가 상장을 받자 장내는 박수소리로 떠나갈듯했고 졸업하는 그 부인의 딸은 울음을 터뜨렸습니다.
노력 상을 받은 어머니와 딸은 세 채 밖에 집이 없는 외딴 섬에 살고았었습니다.
주민이라고는 겨우 20명 뿐인 이 섬에서는 제일 가까운 여수에 볼 일이 있어도 섬사람들이 직접 만든 배를 타고

어머니는 딸이 여덟 살이 되자 남편에게 간청하기를 딸을 육지에서 공부시키자는 말을 어렵게 꺼냈습니다.

이 사실이 주위에 알려지자 졸업생과 학부모, 그리고 선생님들의 감격스러운 울음으로 졸업식장은 울음바다가 되었습니다.
일제 강점기 시절에 음악에 남다른 재능이 많은 이흥렬(李興烈)이라는 청년이 있었습니다.
그가 음악공부를 위해 일본으로 유학을 떠났습니다.
그러나 피아노가 없으면 작곡을 할 수 없다는것을 알았습니다.
그래서 어머니께 편지를 썼습니다.
”어머니! 피아노가 없으니 음악공부를 더 이상은 할 수 없습니다. 음악에는 피아노가 필수라는 것을 뒤늦게야 알았습니다. 어머니, 송구한 말씀이오나 소자는 음악공부를 이만 접고 귀국하려고 합니다.“
어머니는 혼자 몸으로 유학간 아들 뒷바라지를 하느라 형편이 말이 아니었습니다.
하지만 어머니는 다음날 새벽부터 저녁까지 동네 산이란 산을 모조리 뒤져 두손이 피투성이가 될 때까지 쉼없이 솔방울을 줏어 모았습니다.
불쏘시개로 화력이 좋은 솔방울을 팔아 거금 400원 (1930년대 쌀 한가마는 13원)을 만들어 아들에게 보냈습니다.
아들은 눈물을 흘리며 그 돈으로 피아노를 샀습니다.
이렇게 해서 첫번째로 작곡한 노래가 이흥렬 작곡 양주동의 시(詩) “어머니의 마음”입니다.

소싯적 시골집 을타리에는 해마다 오월이면 찔레꽃이 하얗게 피었습니다.
찔레꽃은 꽃송이가 소소(小小)하고 갸날프면서 질박(質樸)합니다.
그러나 그 향은 짙고 강렬합니다.
그런 찔레꽃을 볼 때마다 우리들 어머니의 모습이 떠오릅니다.
웬지 애상(哀傷)적이면서 온정(溫情)적인 이미지/Image 때문일 것입니다.
이런 분위기를 쏙 빼닮은 노래가사가 있습니다.

삼협에서 새끼를 빼앗긴 어미가 벼랑으로 이어진 백여리 강기슭을 뛰어서 따라왔던 것이고 새끼를 잃은 비통함에 어미의 창자가 끊어졌다는 단장(斷腸)의 고사(古史)입니다.
실로 놀라운 일이 아닐수 없습니다.
동물학자들은 ‘단장(斷腸)'의 고사가 실제로도 가능하다고 말합니다.
고릴라나 오랑우탄, 침팬지 등은 새끼를 업거나 안고 다니는 경우가 많으며 새끼가 죽으면 시체가 썩을 때까지 새끼를 안고 다니는 모습을 보는 경우가 허다하다는 것입니다.
