(“Gaining the fish, forgetting the net”

To catch something new, you must let go of what you are holding. But human greed is nothing like that? A human is someone who, with a clenched hand, tries to grab something else.

Humans get hurt because they cannot let go of what they must let go. It is because, by binding themselves with what they have said, and because the grace they have bestowed instead turns into resentment, that everything returns—because they have not let go of anything. A hunter who has finished hunting forgets his bow, and a fisherman who has caught a fish forgets his trap.

The sage king, revered as “Seong Cheonja,” tried to pass on the world to a recluse named “Heo Yu,” but “Heo Yu” declined.

“A sparrow lives in a wide forest, but a few tree branches are enough for it. And even if a mole drinks the water of the Yellow River, if it fills its belly, that is enough.”

After leaving this remark, Heo-yu moved to Gisan and lived there. The king went to find Gisan and asked him to take even the old Zhou land, but “Heo-yu” firmly refused.

Thinking that his ears had become dirty from hearing this king’s request, he washed his ears in running water.

“Why are you washing your ears like that?”

The “so-bu” (the husband of a cow), who was going with a cow in front of him, asked why.
When “Heo-yu” explained the situation he had brought upon himself, “So-bu” laughed heartily and said.

After hearing the story, Sobu burst out laughing loudly.

Heo Yu asked, “Why are you laughing?”

"Well, it’s not because you spread the rumor that you live in hiding that you hear such filthy words. Didn’t you know that, by nature, a hermit should never even let their name known to the world? But you did not gain fame by subtly spreading the rumor that you were a wise sage."

After saying that, as he tried to go up along the water, “Heo-yu” asked.

"Where are you going now?"

“You cannot feed my ox the water you used to wash your ears,” answered “Xiaofu.”

This is a story passed down in “Myeongsimbogam,” a collection of famous sayings compiled by Chujeok, a civil official during King Chungnyeol of Goryeo’s reign.

In the chapter “Zhuangzi’s Outer Chapters,” Zhuangzi introduces those who have rejected power, such as He You, and then adds the following words.

“A trap is a tool used to catch fish, but once it catches a fish, it forgets about it.
“A trap is meant to catch a rabbit, but once it catches the rabbit, it forgets the trap.”

Words are meant to convey meaning, and once they have conveyed it, they are forgotten.

Deu-eo-mangjeon (得魚忘筌): Once you have caught a fish, forget the trap.

Deuui Mang-eon (得意忘言): When you have attained

your purpose, forget the words.

If you carry around something that has served its purpose, your body feels heavy, and your mind feels heavy as well.

If you carry around the kindness you have shown, resentment weighs down your heart; if you carry around the words you have spoken, you will always be watching others’ behavior.

A sparrow is free because it is not tied to a tree branch, and a mole is enough because it is not tied to a river. Only getting drunk and unable to let go is the half-baked wisdom of a human.)
