845. 사람의 품위

사람의 品位 (Person's dignity)*

수렵시대에는 화가 나면 돌을 던졌고,
고대의 로마시대에는
몹시 화가 나면 칼을 들었으며,
미국 서부개척시대에는
총을 뽑았으나
현대에는 화가 나면 말 폭탄을 던진다.

인격을 모독하는 막말을 
일삼는 사람이 있다.
그의 생각이 옳다고 하여도 사용하는 언어가 궤도를 일탈했다면 탈선임이 분명하다.

스페인의 격언 중에
"화살은 심장을 관통하고,
매정한 말은 영혼을 관통한다"란 말이 있다.
화살은 몸에 상처를 내지만
험한 말은 영혼에 상처를 남긴다.

불교 천수경 첫머리에는 
'정구업진언(淨口業眞言)'이 나온다.
입으로 지은 업을 씻어내는 주문이다.
그 중 4가지는

거짓말로 지은 죄업, 꾸민 말로 지은 죄업, 이간질로 지은 죄업, 악한 말로 지은 죄업 을 참회한다는 내용이다.
자신의 참회가 꼭 
이뤄지게 해달라는 주문이 '수리 수리 마하수리 수수리 사바하'이다.

'탈무드'에 혀에 관한 우화가 실려 있다.
어느 날 왕이 광대 두 명을 불렀다.
한 광대에게 "세상에서 가장 악한 것을  찾아오라"고 하고, 다른 광대에게는 "세상에서 가장 선한 것을 가져오라"고 명 하였다.

두 광대는 세상 곳곳을 돌아다니다 몇 년 후 왕의 앞에 나타나 찾아온 것을 내놓았다.
공교롭게도 두 사람이 제시한 것은 '혀'였다.
말은 입 밖으로 나오면 허공으로 사라진다고 생각하기가 쉬우나 그렇지가 않다. 
말의 진짜 생명은 그때부터 시작된다. 

글이 종이에 쓰는 언어라면
말은 허공에 쓰는 언어이다. 
허공에 적은 말은 지울 수도 찢을 수도 없다.

한 번 내뱉은 말은
자체의 생명력으로 공기를 타고 번식한다.
말은 사람의 품격을 측정하는 잣대다.
품격의 품(品)은
입 구(口)자 셋으로 만든 글자이다.
입을 잘 놀리는 것이
사람의 품위를 가늠하는 척도라는 것이다.

논어에 입을 다스리는 것을 군자의 덕목으로 꼽았다.
군자의 군(君)을 보면,
'다스릴 윤(尹)' 아래에 '입 구(口)'가 있다.
입을 다스리는 것이 군자라는 뜻이다.
세 치 혀를 간수하면 군자가 되지만,
잘못 놀리면 한 소인으로 추락한다.

공자는 "더불어 말하여야 할 사람에게 말하지 않으면 사람을 잃는다.
더불어 말하지 말아야 할 사람에게 하면 말을 잃는다"고 하였다.

영국 유명 작가 '조지 오웰'은 
"생각이 언어를 타락시키지만
언어도 생각을 타락시킨다:고 말하였다.
나쁜 말을 자주하면 생각이 오염되고
그 집에 자신이 살 수밖에 없다.

말을 해야 할 때 하지 않으면 백 번 중에 한 번 후회하지만,
말을 하지 말아야 할 때 하면 백 번 중에 아흔아홉 번 후회합니다.

말은 입을 떠나면 책임이라는 추(錘)가 기다리며,
덕담은 많이 할수록 좋지만 잘난 척 하면 상대방이 싫어하고
허세는 한 번 속지 두 번 속지 않습니다.

그러므로 사람의 품위는 마음만 가지고 있어서도 안됩니다.
반드시 실천에 옮겨야 합니다.
앞에서 할 수 없는 말은 뒤에서도 하지 마시고,흥분한 목소리 보다는 낮은 목소리가 더 위력이 있다는 걸
잊지 마세요!!

Harsh remarks that insult one’s character 
There is a person who does it all.
Even if his thinking is correct, if the language he uses has gone off course, it is clearly dereliction of duty.

At the beginning of the Buddhist Thousand-Hand Sutra 
The “Pure Dharma Work Mantra” is recited.
It is a spell to wash away the karma built by the mouth.
Among them, four are

It is a message of repentance for the sins committed through lies, the sins committed through fabricated words, the sins committed through sowing discord, and the sins committed through evil speech.
His own repentance must 
The chant asking for it to be fulfilled is “Surisuri mahasuri susuri sabaha.”

There is a fable about the tongue in the Talmud.
One day the king called two clowns.
He told one clown, “Bring the worst of the world,” and commanded another clown, “Bring the best of the world.”

The two clowns wandered all around the world A few years later, it appeared before the king and presented what had come.
Coincidentally, what the two people presented was a “tongue.”
It is easy to think that once words leave the mouth, they vanish into thin air, but that is not the case. 
A horse’s true life begins then. 

If writing is the language used on paper
Speech is a language used in the void. 
Words written in the void cannot be erased or torn apart.

Once said
It reproduces by riding the air through its own vitality.
Speech is the standard by which a person’s dignity is measured.
The character for “quality” (品) in dignity is
It is a character made up of three “mouth” (口) radicals.
Talking your mouth well is
It is said to be a measure of a person's dignity.

In the Analects, controlling one’s speech was listed as one of the virtues of a gentleman.
When I look at the ruler of a noble man,
Under “Yun (尹) to rule,” there is “mouth (口).”
It means that a noble person controls their mouth.
If you keep your tongue in check, you become a gentleman, but,
If you tease me wrongly, I will fall into becoming a petty person.

Confucius said, “If you do not speak to the person you should speak with, you lose them.”
He also said, “If you say it to someone you should not speak to, you will be left speechless.”

The famous British writer George Orwell 
"Thoughts corrupt language, but
Language also corrupts thought, it was said.
If you often say bad things, your thoughts become polluted
I have no choice but to live in that house.

If you don’t speak when you

should, you’ll regret it once in a hundred times, but,
If you speak when you should not, you will regret it 99 times out of a hundred.

When words leave the mouth, the weight of responsibility waits,
The more kind words you say, the better, but if you act all high and mighty, the other person will dislike it
Bluffing is fooled once, not twice.

Therefore, a person’s dignity cannot be established by having only a mind.
It must be put into practice.
Don’t say things you can’t say in front, and remember that a low voice is more powerful than an excited one
