봄을 가지고 온 아이  

아직 날씨가 쌀쌀한 봄날
아동복 가게에 허름한
옷차림의 아주머니가
여자아이와 함께
들어오셨습니다.

"우리 딸이예요,
예쁜 티셔츠
하나 주세요."

나는 아이에게 "마음에
드는 것을 하나 고르라."
고 하였습니다.

그랬더니
아이는 환하게 웃으며,
"아무거나 괜찮아요. 
엄마가 골라주시면
다 좋아요."
하는 것이었습니다.

옷을 고르면서 하는 두
모녀의 대화에서 모녀의
사랑이 흘러 넘쳤습니다.
두 모녀는 만원짜리
티셔츠를 사가지고
나갔습니다.

그런데 얼마 뒤,
아이가 그 옷을 들고와서
"저, 죄송한데요.
이거 돈으로 돌려주시면
안 될까요?"

"왜 엄마가 사주신 건데
무르려고?
엄마한테 혼나면
어쩌려구?"

나는 약간 불쾌감을
감추지 못하면서
말했습니다.
아이는 얼굴이
빨개지면서 말했습니다.

"사실은 엄마가 시장
좌판에서 야채장사를 하셔요.
하루 종일 벌어도 하루에 만원을
못버실 때도 있어요.
엄마한테 미안해서
이 옷을 못 입겠어요."

순간 내 코 끝이 찡해 왔습니다.

고사리같은 손으로 그 큰 사랑을
가지고 온 아이가 너무나 예뻤습니다.

"그래, 예쁜 생각을 하는구나.
이 돈은 다시 엄마에게 갖다 드리고
이 옷은 아줌마가 네 그 고운
마음씨가 예뻐서 네게 선물로
주는거야 ..."하면서 작은 청바지와
함께 예쁘게 싸서 아이에게
들려주면서 말했습니다.

"그래, 마음씨가 이렇게 예쁘니
공부도 잘하겠지만 공부 열심히 해서
훌륭한 사람이 되었으면 좋겠다."

그 날은, 봄을 가지고 온 예쁜 마음의
아이 때문인지 종일 손님도 많이
오셨고, 내 기분도 상쾌한 봄날씨
그대로 였습니다.

다음 날 아주머니가 큰 봉지에
몇가지 봄나물을 가득 담아가지고
오셔서 "얘가 무얼 사주면 늘 그래요."
하시면서 미안하다고 몇 번이나
말씀하셨습니다.

"착한 딸을 두셔서 좋으시겠어요 ...
아주머니가 참 부럽네요! "

"예, 고생하는 보람이 있지요.
이 가게도 복 받으시라고
기도할게요."

세상이 온통 혼탁하고 자기 생각만
하며 사는듯한 현실에서 이런
아름다운 사연을 대하니 마음이
훈훈해지는 것을 느낍니다

지금이라도 우리가 순수한 마음을
되찾아 나누고 섬기며 이해하고
배려하는 사람이 사는 살 맛나는
세상에서 살 수 있기를 기대합니다.

아이 마음도 예쁘지만
이를 격려하는 옷 가게 주인의
마음도 갖고 싶습니다.
