만나는 사람들마다
“샬롬(Shalom)"이라고
인사하던 신부님이 계셨다.

아시다시피 히브리어
샬롬[שָׁלוֹם]은 평화, 평강, 평안하라는 인사말이다.

한 번은 얼굴이 시꺼멓고
뼈만 앙상하게 남은 남자가
성당 앞으로 지나가기에
신부님은 평상시처럼 “샬롬!” 하며 큰 소리로 그에게 인사를 했다.

그런데 이 사람이 그 다음 주일부터 성당에 나와 뒷자리에 앉아 간절한 모습으로 주일미사를 함께한 후에 가곤했다.

그렇게 몇개월이 지난 어느 날
이 사람이 신부님을 찾아와
식사를 함께하면 어떻겠냐고
신부님께 의사를 물었다.
그렇게 그와 식사를 함께 하게 되었는데 이 사람이 이런 말을 했다.

자신은 그동안 사업이 잘되어서
돈도 많이 벌었고 명예도 얻었으며, 골프도 해외여행도 쾌락도 즐겼다.
집안도 평안했고 자녀들도 잘 됐다.

그러던 어느 날 몸이 자꾸 나른하고 부어 오르며 기력이 떨어지더니 얼굴이 시꺼멓게 변해가는 것이다.
종합병원에서 진료를 받아 보았더니 천만 뜻밖에 간암 진단을 받았다.
손을 쓸 수 없는 간암 말기 상태였다.

의사는 “잘해야 3 개월입니다.”
라고 선고했다.
그야말로 청천벽력이었다.
이 소식을 듣고
아내, 자녀들, 친구들까지 3개월 사형 선고에 안절부절이었다.

그때부터 자기 자신도 이제는
죽을 놈이라는 생각에 고통스러웠다.
그런데 신부님께서 나를 보자 마자 “살 놈!” 이라는 말을 했다.

모두 다 "죽을 놈, 죽을 놈" 하는데,
신부님이 성당 앞에서 만나자 마자 “살 놈!” 이라고 하시니
그만 정신이 번쩍 들었다.

“그래. 맞아 나는 죽을 놈이
아니고 멋지게 살 놈이다.”
살아봐야겠다고 생각이 들자
곧바로 성당에 나오게 되었다.

의사는 그에게 3 개월밖에 못 산다고 하는데, “살 놈”이라 생각하니 자신감이 생겼다. 미사에 참석하고 돌아와서 약을 챙겨 먹고 자기의 몸을 추슬렀다.

“그래 나는 죽을 놈이 아닌 살 놈이야! 성당 신부님이 나를 처음 보자마자 살 놈이라고 말씀하셨어.”

살 놈이라고 생각하니
금새 몸이 가벼워지는 것 같아
운동도 조금씩 하며 잘 챙겨 먹고 잘 쉬었다.
결국 힘들었던 말기 간암을 극적으로 이겨내고 건강을 회복했다고 한다.

이 사람은 “샬롬!”이라는
인사말을 “살 놈!”으로 알아 들었다.
그런데 진짜 살롬의 역사가 실현되었다.
살롬 소리 그대로 기적이 일어난 것이다.

일본에는 "언령(言靈)"
이란 개념이 있다고 한다.
말에 혼이 있다는 뜻인데,
이것은 단순한 전설이나
풍습이 아니다.
과학적으로도 충분히 입증할 수 있다.

단, 여기에는 조건이 하나 있다.
그것은 말을 소리 내어서
읊어야 한다는 것이다.
즉, 낭송을 하는 것이다.

자꾸 자꾸만 반복하다 보면
말한대로 결과가 이루어지는데
이를 자기이행적 예언
(Self-Fulfilling Prophecy)이라 한다.

부정적인 말이
실패와 불행을 부르고,
긍정적인 말이
성공과 행복을 가져온다.
사용하는 언어를 바꾸면 운명이 바뀐다.
말을 하는대로 이루어진다는 것이다.

오늘도 샬롬을 전하고
샬롬을 노래하자.

It means you have to recite it.
