466. 암소 아홉 마리

우리나라의 한 의사가 아프리카의
어느 외진 마을에서 의료 봉사를 할 때에
외국에 가서 선진 축산 기술을 배우고 돌아온
현지 마을의 젊은 청년을 알게 되었다.

그 마을에는 독특한 결혼 풍습이 있었는데,
청혼할 때 남자가 암소를 끌고 처녀의 집에 가서

“암소 받고 딸 주세요.”라고 말을 하는 것이었다.

최고의 신부감에게는  
암소 세 마리를,
괜찮은 신부감은
암소 두 마리를,
보통 신부감이면
암소 한 마리로도
승낙을 얻을 수 있었다.

어느 날 의사는 그 청년이 친구들과 함께
이웃 마을에 청혼을 하러 가는 광경을 보았는데
놀랍게도 이 청년이 몰고 나온 청혼 선물은 살찐 암소 아홉 마리였다.

사람들은 상대가 누구인지 궁금해 하면서 술렁이기 시작하였다.

청년은 마을 촌장집도,
지역 유지인 농장 주인의 집도,
마을 부잣집도
그냥 지나쳤다.

한참을 걷더니 어느 허름한 집 앞에 멈춰섰다.

그리고는
그 집 헙수룩한 노인의 딸에게 청혼을 하는 것이었다

그런데
그 딸은 너무 마르고 보잘 것 없는 처녀였다.

암소 한 마리에 청혼할 상대에 불과한데,
암소 아홉 마리를 데리고 간 것을 보고는
동네 사람들은 심지어
그 처녀가 마법으로  
청년을 홀린 것이라고 수근대기도 했다.

그 후 의사는 의료 봉사를 마치고
본국으로 되돌아왔다.

오랜 세월이 지나서 의료 봉사차
다시 그 마을을 찾아간 의사는,
그 청년이 왜 아홉 마리의 암소를 몰고
왜소해 보이는 처녀에게 청혼을 했는지 궁금하였다.

큰 사업가가 되어 있는
그 청년에게 저녁 식사에 초대를 받았다.

의사는 청혼 선물로
아홉 마리를 건넨 이유를 물어보았다.

그 청년은 빙긋 웃을 뿐
별다른 이야기를 하지 않았다.

궁금증만 더 커져 갈 즈음에
찻잔을 들고 한 여인이 들어 왔다.

유창한 영어와 교양미가 넘치는
미소까지 아름답고 우아한 여인이었다.

의사는 마음속으로
‘아!
이 사람이 그때의 보잘것 없던 메마른 처녀 말고
다른 아내를 맞이했구나.’ 라고 생각하였다.

그때 사업가가 천천히 말을 시작하였다.

“선생님,
저 사람이 그때
제가 청혼하였던
그 사람입니다.”

의사의 놀란 모습을 보고
그 젊은이는 말을 이어갔다.

“저는 어렸을 적부터
그 여인을 사랑하였고
결혼을 꿈꾸어 왔습니다.

저희 마을에서는
몇 마리의 암소를 받았느냐가 여자들의 세계에서는 중요한 문제였습니다.

저도 그런 관습에 따라
청혼을 위해서 암소를 몰고 갔습니다.

사실 제 아내는 당시
한 마리의 암소면 혼인 승낙을 받을 수가 있었습니다.

그렇지만
제가 정말 사랑한 여인이 스스로 자신의 가치를
한 마리의 암소 값으로 생각하고
평생을 사는 것을 원하지 않았습니다.

또한 자신을 두 마리나, 세 마리를 받았던 
다른 처녀들과 비교하면서
움츠리고 살게하고 싶지 않았습니다.

청혼 때 암소 몇 마리를 받았느냐가
평생동안 자기 가치를 결정할 수가 있기 때문에
저는 세 마리를 뛰어 넘는 아홉 마리를 생각해
낸 것입니다.

결혼하고 난 뒤에 아내에게
공부를 하라거나 외모를 꾸미라고
요구한 적이 없습니다.

저는 있는 그대로의 아내를 사랑했고,
또 사랑한다고 이야기해 주었을 뿐입니다.

처음에는 무척 놀라던 아내가
곧 저의 진심을 받아들이기 시작하였습니다.

혹시나 나에게
암소 아홉 마리의 가치가 있는 것은 아닐까?
생각하기 시작했습니다.

그 후 아내는
암소 아홉 마리에
걸맞는 사람으로
변하기 시작했습니다.

아내는 미모와 지성을 갖춘
훌륭한 여성으로 점점 변해 갔습니다.

처음에 수근대던 동네 아낙들도
요즘은 제 아내의 아름답고 지성적인 모습을
사랑하고 존경하게 되었답니다.

사람의 가치는 사랑이 바탕입니다

가족이나 주변 공동체의 사람들의
가치 값을 올려 주는 우리가 됩시다!

한마리 소값의 처녀였지만
아홉마리 값을 쳐 준 사랑의 사람
결국은 천마리 소 값으로 변화하게 된 일

우리도 내 가족,내 이웃의 값을
높게 올리며 살아 갑시다.

예수님은 한 생명은
천하보다 귀하다고 하셨습니다.
