4 (四)에서 비롯되는 것으로는 "東西南北"의 기본방위(基本方位)이며,

어두운 밤하늘을 밝히며 많은 이들 가슴에 소망을 담아주는 달은

모든 중생에게 즐거움을 주고 괴로움과 미혹(迷惑)을 없애주는 자(慈)·비(悲)·희(喜)·사(捨)의 네 가지 무량심(無量心)을 의미합니다.
이를 마음의 4가지 방의(芳意)라고 합니다.
사찰을 가보면 동서남북으로 4천왕(天王)을 두고 있으며, 4종류의 영적인 동물로 "청룡(靑龍), 백호(白虎), 주작(朱雀), 현무(玄武)"를 가리켜 4령(四靈) 이라고 부릅니다.
