332. 일상의 기적

일상의 기적 ****

덜컥 탈이 났다.
유쾌하게 저녁식사를 마치고 귀가했는데
갑자기 허리가 뻐근했다.

자고 일어나면 낫겠거니 대수롭지 않게 여겼는데
웬걸,
아침에는 침대에서
일어나기 조차 힘들었다.

그러자
하룻밤 사이에
사소한 일들이
굉장한 일로 바뀌어 버렸다.

세면대에서
허리를 굽혀 세수하기,
바닥에 떨어진 물건을 줍거나
양말을 신는 일,
기침을 하는 일,

앉았다가 일어나는 일이
내게는 더 이상 쉬운 일이 아니었다.

별수 없이 병원에 다녀와서
하루를 빈둥거리며 보냈다.
비로소
몸의 소리가 들려왔다.

실은 그동안
목도 결리고,
손목도 아프고,
어깨도 힘들었노라,
눈도 피곤했노라,
몸 구석구석에서 불평을 해댔다.

언제까지나
내 마음대로 될 줄 알았던 나의 몸이, 이렇게 기습적으로
반란을 일으킬 줄은
예상조차 못했던 터라
어쩔 줄 몰라 쩔쩔매는 중이다.

이때 중국 속담이 떠올랐다.
“기적은 하늘을 날거나
바다위를 걷는 것이 아니라, 땅에서 걸어 다니는 것이다.”

예전에 싱겁게 웃어 넘겼던 그 말이 다시 생각난 건,
반듯하고 짱짱하게 걷는 게 결코 쉬운 일이 아님을 실감하게 되었기 때문이다.
괜한 말이 아니었다.

‘아프기 전과 후’가
이렇게 명확하게 갈리는 게 몸의 신비가 아니고 무엇이랴!

얼마 전에는 젊은 날에
윗분으로 모셨던 분의 병문안을 다녀왔다.

몇년에 걸쳐
점점 건강이 나빠져
이제 그분이
자기 힘으로 할 수 있는 것은
눈을 깜빡이는 정도에 불과했다.

예민한 감수성과
날카로운 직관력으로
명성을 날리던 분의
그런 모습을 마주하고 있으려니,
한때의 빛나던 재능도 다 소용 없구나싶어
서글픈 마음이 들었다.

돌아오면서
지금 저분이 가장 원하는 것이 무엇일까 생각해 보았다.

혼자서 일어나고,
좋아하는 사람들과
웃으며 이야기하고,
함께 식사하고,
산책하는 등
그런 아주 사소한 일이 아닐까.

다만 그런 소소한 일상이 기적이라는 것을 깨달았을 때는
대개는 너무 늦은 뒤라는 점이 안타깝다.

우리는 하늘을 날고
물 위를 걷는 기적을 이루고 싶어 안달하며 무리를 한다.

땅 위를 걷는 것쯤은
당연한 일인 줄 알고 말이다.

사나흘 동안
노인네처럼 파스도 붙여 보고
물리치료도 받아 보니 알겠다.

타인에게 일어나는 일은 나에게도
일어날 수 있는 일이라는 것을...

크게 걱정하지 말라는 진단이지만
아침에 벌떡 일어나는 일이 감사한 일임을
이번에 또 배웠다.

건강하면 다 가진
것이다.

일상에 감사하며 살자!

지금, 감사를 느끼고 계시는지?

그런데 왜

늘 불행하다고
생각하는 걸까요?

행복을 누릴 수 있고,

이미 올라가 있다고 생각합니다.
