316. 고요한 물은 깊이 흐른다.

잘났다고 큰 소리를 내는 세상이지만
진실로 속이 꽉 찬 사람은

자신을 드러내지 않습니다.

짖는 개는 물지 않고
물려고 하는 개는 짖지 않듯이
大人은 허세(虛勢)를 부리지 않고
시비(是非)를 걸어 이기거나
다투며 싸우고자 하지 않습니다.

시끄럽게
떠들고 이기고자 함은
속이 좁은 탓에
빚어지는 허세일 뿐이며
마음이 넓고
속내의 수심이 깊은 사람은
알아도 모르는 척하며 자신의 재주를
과시하거나 돋보이려 하지 않습니다.

진정한 실력자는
모든것을실력으로명확하게 보여주고
눈으로 확실하게 증명을 하여 보여주며
다만 붓을 들어 세상의 옳고 그름을
나즈막한 소리로 설(說)하기만 하지요.

어떤 가정에
부산스런 아이가 있었어요.
어느날 이
아이가 아버님이 아끼시는
조상 대대로
내려온 회중 시계를 가지고
놀다가 그만
잃어버리고 말았습니다.

아이는 열심히
찾았으나 찾을길이 없자
어머니에게
말을 했습니다.

아이의 등을 두드리며 위로를 해 준후
침착하게 모두가 하던 일들을 멈추고
집안에 모든 전원까지 다 끈 채
지금부터 조용히 있어 보자고 했습니다.

잠시 침묵이
흐른후 얼마 되지 않아서
'째깍째깍' 소리가
들리기 시작했습니다.

시계는 주위
환경이 조용해지자
구석진 바닥
한구석에서 자신이 있는
위치를
주인에게 알리고 있었지요.

그러자 아버지
께서는 아들에게 이렇게 말을 했습니다.

"얘야!
세상이 시끄러울때는

침묵이란 긴 인내와 희망을

하는지도 모릅니다.

2년~3년이란 시간이 걸리지만,
