185. 가황 나훈아

가황[ 歌   皇]

사람들은 그를 가황(歌皇) 이라고 부른다. 우리나라 가요 100년 사에 가황은 오직 나훈아 단 한 명 뿐이다.
국민가수, 가수왕, 가수여왕은 여러 명 있지만 가황은 한 명 뿐이니 품격이 다른 호칭이다.
사람들은 왜 가수 나훈아를 가황이라고 부를까?

일단 노래를 잘 해야 가황이다. 그러나 노래 잘 하는 가수는 여러 명이 있다. 작곡가 작사가 등 음악인들에게 누가 노래를 가장 잘 하는지 물어보면 여러 가수의 이름이 나온다.

'가요무대'를 오래 진행해 오고 있고 가요에 조예가 깊은 김동건 아나운서에게 직접 물어본 적이 있다. 해방 이후 수많은 가수 중 가장 노래를 잘 한 분은 '현인' 선생이라고 한다. 절대 음감과 타고난 음색을 지녔다는 평이다. 그밖에도 불멸의 가수들이 많이 있다.

그러나 가황은 오직 한 명 뿐이다.
그 이유를 알고싶은 마음이 간절해진 건 코로나 시절 KBS에서 방영한 '나훈아 Again ' 공연을 본 다음이다. 전국민이 코로나에 지쳐있을 때 국민을 위로하기 위해 탄생한 초대형 공연이었다. 이때 나는 가황이 부른 '테스형'에 풍덩 빠져버렸다.
"테스형, 세상이 왜 이래, 왜 이렇게 힘들어"
우리나라 가요사에 철학의 아버지 소크라테스를 소환한 건 이 노래가 처음이다. 코로나로 온 세상이 힘들고 우울하고 혼돈에 빠져있을 때 그는 위대한 철학자를 소환하여 국민을 위로하였다.

사람들은 가황 나훈아를 만나고 싶어하지만 만날 수가 없다.
오직 공연장에서만 만날 수 있다. 아무데서나 만날 수 있으면 황제가 아니다. 방송출연도 안하고 이런저런 행사에도 참석하지 않는다. 공연도 자주하지 않는다. 사람들은 이를 '신비주의 ' 라고 말한다. 그를 안다는 사람도 없고 만났다는 사람도 거의 없다.

다행히 나에게는 그를 잘 아는 사람이 있다. 두 명이다. 한 사람은 나훈아 쇼를 연출한 K 피디이고 또 한 사람은 2001년 나사모 창립 멤버이며 50년째 가황 찐팬인 이재술 와인 소믈리에 이다. 두 사람 모두 나와는 절친이다. 이재술 소믈리에는 만날 때마다 본업인 와인 이야기 보다 나훈아 이야기에 더 열을 올린다. 나훈아 LP판을 모두 모았고 모임이 있을 때는 포터블 소형 축음기를 가지고 와서 함께 노래 감상을 한다. 신문 잡지 스크랩도 수십권이다. 나훈아와 관련된 이야기는 모두 기억하고 있다. 비화도 많이 들었다.

올해초 또 다른 기회가 생겼다. 나훈아쇼를 연출한 K 피디와 여의도에서 단둘이 식사를 하게 되었다. 초대형 공연을 준비하느라 가황 나훈아와 몇개월을 함께 생활했고 최근까지 인연을 이어오고 있으니 가장 깊숙한 이야기를 들을 수 있는 기회였다. 가황에게 누가될까봐 조심하는 K 피디에게 작심하고 캐물었다.

흥미진진한 이야기를 듣느라 소주를 각 일 병씩 마셨다. 들을수록 놀랍고 신비한 내용이었다. 결론은 가수 나훈아가  '한국의 소크라테스' 라는 것이다. 그날 내가 정리한 가황의 모습은 이렇다.

첫째, 그는 독서광이고 동양철학자 노자(老子) 연구가이다. 그는 일년에 백권 이상의 책을 정독하는 독서광이다. 독서를 통해 세상사를 파고든다. 철학자 노자에 관해서는 평생 파고들어서 노자전공 철학자 수준이 되었다. 그는 수많은 노래를 직접 작사 작곡했는데 가사에 가슴을 울리는 철학이 들어있는 것은 그가 철학자이기 때문이다.

둘째, 그는 내공깊은  화가이다.
그는 공연이 없는 은둔의 시간에 그림을 그린다. 자택에 화실이 있고 지하실에는 작품보관소가 있다고 한다. 작품은 산수화 등 자연을 그린 게 많고 까치와 한복입은 여인 등을 주제로한 작품을 보았는데 빼어난 수준이었다고 한다. 작품전을 하면 좋겠다고 하니 가수의 본업은 노래라며 말을 끊었다고 한다. 가황이 꾸준히 그림을 그리는 것은 차분히 심신을 갈고 닦는 수행인 것이다.

셋째, 그는 절제의 미학을 실천한다. 해야 할 일은 반드시 하고 안해야 할 일은 절대 안한디. 언행에 원칙과 소신이 있다. 삼성 이건희 회장이 회갑연에 오직 한 사람 나훈아를 부르려고 했다가 무산되었다. "내는 특정한 사람을 위해 노래하지 않습니다. 내 노래 듣고 싶으면 티켙 끊어서 공연장에 오라 카이소"

넷째, 매사 정정당당한 위인이다. 문재인 정권시절 남북화해 분위기를 띄우려고 연예인 평양공연을 추진하였다. 북쪽에서도 나훈아를 방북가수로 지목했다고 한다. 그는 단칼에 거절하였다. 자유가 없는 북한에 가서 이리저리 안내하는 대로 다니고 무슨 동상 앞에서 절하고 이런 건 안한다는 게 이유였다. 청와대에 잘못보이면 손해라는 말에 끄떡도 하지않았다. 권력자의 눈치를 보지않고 당당한 게 황제의 모습이다.

다섯째, 서민을 사랑하는 마음이다. 그의 노래에는 어머니와 고향 그리고 서민을 위로하는 가사가 많다. 가수는 노래를 통해 사람을 위로하고 희망을 주는 존재라는 확고한 신념에서 나온 일이다. 그의 노래를 들으면 가슴이 따뜻해진다.

여섯째, 직업적 카리스마가 있다.
공연장 무대준비는 완벽해야 한다. 큰 돈이 들어가도 좋고 손해를 보아도 좋다. 매번 최상의 무대에서 최상의 공연을 보여주어야 한다. 공연 한 번에 열다섯 번 이상 갈아입는 무대의상도 직접 디자인하고 준비한다. 로마 황제가 아무 옷이나 입지않는 것과 마찬가지다. 돈은 왔다가도 가고, 갔다가도 오는 거지만 나훈아의 공연은 최상의 역사로 관중에게 다가가야 한다는 소신이다.

일곱째, 의리가 있고 약속을 지킨다.
함께 공연을 준비한 사람들과 한 번 약속한 것은 반드시 지킨다. 어려움을 겪는 사람을 보면 성의껏 도와준다. 많은 사람을 사귀지는 않지만 한 번 맺은 인연을 소중히 여긴다. 그와 한 번이라도 인연을 맺은 사람은 그를 하늘이 보내준 위대한 인물로 여긴다.

가황 나훈아가 은퇴를 선언하였다. 올해 공연을 마치면 가요계 근처에는 얼씬도 하지않고 완전히 떠나겠다고 밝헜다. 말한 대로 실천하며 살아온 인물이니 그럴 것이다. 이제 가황은 떠나고 노래만 남을 것이다. 그러나 그는 떠나도 소크라테스처럼, 노자처럼 우리 마음에 영원히 남아있을 것이다. 가황 나훈아가 테스형이다...

First of all, singers must be good at singing. However, there are several singers who are good at singing. When you ask musicians, including composers and lyricists, who are the best singers, the names of several singers come out.

I have asked announcer Kim Dong-gun, who has been hosting the "Song Stage" for a long time and is well versed in Korean pop songs. Among the numerous singers since liberation, the one who sang the best is said to be Hyun-in. He is said to have an absolute pitch and a natural tone. There are many other immortal singers.

But there is only one vulva.
I became desperate to know why after watching the performance of 'Na Hoon-ah Again' aired by KBS during the Corona period. It was a huge performance created to comfort the people when the whole nation was tired of Corona. At this time, I fell in love with the song 'Teshyeong' sung by Gae Hwang.
"Tes, what's wrong with the world? Why is it so hard?"
This song is the first time that Socrates, the father of philosophy, has been summoned to Korean song history. When the whole world was struggling, depressed, and in chaos due to COVID-19, he summoned a great philosopher to comfort the people.

People want to meet Na Hoon-ah, the Gaehwang, but they can't.
You can meet them only at the concert hall. If you can meet them anywhere, you are not an emperor. He does not appear on TV or attend many events. He does not perform often either. People call it "mysticism." No one knows him or has met him.

Fortunately, I know him well. There are two people. One is producer K who directed Na Hoon-ah's show, and the other is Lee Jae-sul, wine sommelier who is a founding member of Nasamo in 2001 and has been a fan of vulcanization for 50 years. Both of them are best friends with me. Whenever we meet, Lee Jae-sul, sommelier, is more passionate about Na Hoon-ah's story than about wine. I collected all the Na Hoon-ah LP records, and when we have a meeting, I bring a portable small phonograph and listen to the songs together. There are dozens of newspaper clippings. I remember all the stories related to Na Hoon-ah. I also heard a lot of stories about it.

Earlier this year, I had another opportunity. I got to eat alone in Yeouido with producer K, who directed the Na Hoon-ah show. It was an opportunity to hear the deepest story because I lived with Na Hoon-ah, a household name, for several months while preparing for a large-scale performance and have continued to be connected until recently. I asked producer K, who was careful about who he would be to the household name.

I drank a bottle of soju each while listening to an interesting story. The more I listened to it, the more surprising and mysterious it was. The conclusion is that singer Na Hoon-ah is the 'Socratic of Korea'. This is what I organized that day.

First, he is a bookworm and a researcher of Oriental philosopher 老. He is a bookworm who reads more than 100 books a year. He delves into world history through reading. As for philosopher Lao-tzu, he has studied all his life and became a philosopher who majored in Lao-tzu. He wrote and composed numerous songs himself, and the lyrics contain heart-wrenching philosophy because he is a philosopher.

Second, he is a painstaking painter.
He paints in a time of seclusion when there is no performance. It is said that there is a studio at home and a work storage in the basement. There are many paintings of nature such as landscape paintings, and I saw works on the theme of magpies and women wearing hanbok, and it was said that they were outstanding. When he said it would be nice to have an exhibition, he stopped talking about singing as the singer's main job. Gae Hwang's constant painting is a practice of calmly changing the mind and body.

Third, he practices the aesthetics of moderation. He always does what he has to do and never does what he has not to do. There are principles and beliefs in his words and actions. Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee tried to sing Na Hoon-ah only one person for his 60th birthday, but it was canceled. "I don't sing for a specific person. If you want to hear my song, please come to the concert hall with Kaiso."

Fourth, he is a great man who is fair in everything. During the Moon Jae In regime, a celebrity Pyongyang performance was promoted to raise the atmosphere of inter-Korean reconciliation. It is said that the North also pointed out Na Hoon-ah as a North Korean singer. He refused at once. The reason was that he went to North Korea, where there was no freedom, and he did not bow to the statue or anything. He did not even hesitate to say that it would be a loss if it was seen wrong to the Blue House. The emperor is confident without paying attention to those in power.

Fifth, she loves the common people. Her songs contain many lyrics that comfort her mother, her hometown and the common people. Singers have a firm belief that they comfort people and give hope through their songs. Listening to her songs warms my heart.

Sixth, there is professional charisma.
The preparation for the performance at the venue should be perfect. It is good to spend a lot of money or lose money. You have to show the best performance on the best stage every time. They also


design and prepare stage costumes that can be changed more than 15 times at a time. It is the same as the Roman emperor does not wear anything. Money comes and goes, but Na Hoon-ah believes that her performance should reach the audience with the best history.

Seventh, he is loyal and keeps his promise.
I always keep my promise with the people who prepared the performance together. When you see a person who is in trouble, you help him with all your heart. You don't make many people, but you cherish a relationship you have once established. Anyone who has ever had a relationship with him considers him a great person from heaven.

Ha-hwang Na Hoon-ah has announced his retirement. After this year's performance, he said he would leave completely without going anywhere near the music industry. He must be because he has lived according to what he said. Now Ga-hwang will leave and only the song will remain. However, even if he leaves, he will remain in our hearts forever like Socrates and Lao-tzu. Ha-hwang Na Hoon-ah is the Tess brother...)
