673. 메멘토 모리, 죽음을 기억하라.

메멘토 모리’에는 세 가지 철학적 가치를 담았다.

‘죽음을 기억하라!
운명을 사랑하라!
현재에 충실하라!’ 라는 것이다.
이 세 경구는 오늘을 사는 우리에게도 획 하나 가감없이 들어맞는 처세훈이자 삶의 태도다.

생전에 스티브 잡스도 스탠퍼드대 졸업식 축하연설에서 이를 강조했다. 췌장암 투병으로 힘든 시기를 보내던 잡스가 연단에 올라 ‘죽음은 삶이 만든 최고의 발명품’ 이라고 격찬했다. 죽음이 없었으면 나는 실패한 인생을 살았을 것이라는 의미였다.

그러므로 “제한된 나에 주어진 시간을 다른 사람의 인생을 살 듯이 낭비하지 말라”라며 “오로지 자신을 믿고, 열정으로 집중하십시오.” 사회로 첫 발을 내딛는 스탠퍼드 학생들에게 혼신의 힘을 실어 일렀다.

메멘토 모리와 함께 자주 인용되는 또 하나의 문장이 있다.
‘카르페 디엠(carpe diem)'.
본래 이 말은 오만하지 말고 ‘현재를 가치있게 살라’ 라는 뜻으로, 오늘을 즐기며 살라는 것으로도 읽힌다.

메멘토 모리와 카르페 디엠은 언뜻 보면 다른 뜻 같아 보이나 늘 함께 짝을 이루어 역사의 물결을 타고 사람들에게 속살거린다.

우리에게도 화무십일홍(花無十日紅)이라는 같은 맥락의 문장이 있다. 열흘 가는 꽃이 없듯이 한 번 흥한 것은 반드시 쇠한다는 이치를 꿰뚫고 있다.

트롯 가수 김연자가 불러 유명한 ‘아모르 파티’도 일맥상통한다.
‘아모르 파티’ (Amor fati)
사랑을 뜻하는 ‘아모르’와 운명을 뜻한 ‘파티’를 합성한 라틴어로 ‘운명을 사랑하라’는 뜻을 지녔다. 인간이 가져야 할 기본이 되는 삶의 태도로, 니체가 처음 사용했다.

메멘토 모리의 처세훈은 미국 남서부에 거주한 나바호족에서도 찾을 수 있다.
“네가 세상에 울면서 태어날 때 세상은 기뻐했으니, 네가 죽을 때는 세상은 울어도 너는 기뻐할 수 있도록, 그러한 삶을 살라.”

마음을 휘어잡는 짧은 문장들…
<메멘토 모리>,<카르페 디엠>,<아모르 파티>, <화무십일홍>까지 모든 문장은 한결같이 겸손한 삶을 이르고 있다. 그것이 인간이 상기해야 할 본분임을 깨친다.

생명이 너의 코에 달려 있다.
날숨 한 번 뱉었다가 들이키지 못하면 죽고, 하늘에서 떨어지는 새똥 하나를 피하지 못하는 게 연약한 사람이다.

그러니 교만하지 말고 매 순간 삶을 성찰하며 살라고 이른다. 죽음을 기억하고 운명을 사랑하고 오늘에 충실하라고.

These three oral statements are the attitude of life and the manner in which every stroke fits us today.

During his lifetime, Steve Jobs emphasized this in his commencement speech at Stanford University. Jobs, who had been struggling with pancreatic cancer, took the podium and praised him as "death is the greatest invention life has ever created." This meant that without death, I would have lived a life of failure.

Therefore, "Don't waste your limited time as if you were living someone else's life," he said. "Just trust yourself and focus with passion." Stanford students, who are taking their first steps into society, gave their all.

There is another sentence often cited with Memento Mori.
"Carpe diem".
Originally, this word means "live the present in value" without being arrogant, and is also read as to live while enjoying today.

Memento Mori and Carpe Diem may seem to mean something different at first glance, but they always pair up together to ride the waves of history and whisper to people.

We also have a sentence in the same context: hwa-mu-Il-hong (十 and 紅). Just as there are no flowers that last 10 days, it is clear that once you flourish, you will surely decline.

The famous "Amor Party" sung by trot singer Kim Yeon-ja is also in line.
"Amor fati" (Amor fati)
It is a Latin compound of "Amor," which means love, and "Party," which means fate, and means "Love destiny." It was first used by Nietzsche as the basic attitude of life that humans should have.

Memento Mori's taxidermy can also be found in the Navajo people living in the southwestern United States.
"The world was happy when you were born crying to the world, so when you die, the world will be happy even if you cry, so live such a life."

Short sentences that take over the mind...
From "Memento Mori", "Carpe Diem", "Amor Fati", and "Hwamu Ilhong", all sentences have a uniformly

humble life. It awakens the duty of man to be reminded.

Life is on your nose.
A vulnerable person dies if he exhales and cannot inhale, and cannot avoid a bird droop falling from the sky.

So, he says, "Don't be arrogant and live your life reflecting on your life every moment. Remember death, love destiny, and be faithful to today.")
